Your First Guitar Experience

February 19th, 2008 by Bah

Lets get things kicked off by remembering the time we actually received our first guitar. Now I don’t know about you guys but that day was one of the best days ever for me and by far the best Christmas present. That Christmas I received an Ovation Celebrity, cranberry red with electric/acoustic technology, and the tone and sound ten times more powerful than the nylon string guitars I was custom-ed to playing in high school guitar class. Although, I should give credit to the SEGA system I got when I was like eleven; that was pretty cool too. But lets face it, getting a guitar is wicked cool. Nothing compares.

In high school I was a swimmer and baseball player. One sport in the Fall/Winter the other in the Spring. So I would get out of school around 2:30pm and then head directly to practice which lasted until about 5:30-6:00pm. I would then go home exhausted and get my homework done. By the time I was all done it was about 8:30pm or so and finally, time to play guitar. I would then of course, go to bed at a very late time only to wake up four hours later to go back to school and repeat the same schedule over again.

I write about this today because it reminds me of a great lesson I learned when I decided I wanted to play guitar. You can imagine, I’m sure, how tired I must have been staying up all night to play guitar. And I can imagine as well, that there are a lot of you who have done the same and rightfully so, have learned the same lesson as I once did. Back then I had a lot more things to do in the course of one day than I do today. So much that the only time I could ever play guitar was if I had enough energy left in me at the end of the day to stay up for a few hours and just play; sometimes it was the same damn song over and over again. It was tough. It was hard. Sometimes I didn’t think I would ever be able to play. That’s where the lesson came in. Patiences Billy boy! Patiences! And you must practice Billy, so much for so long. Back then I had a lot to do. Today, I don’t do any of the same things I did back in high school. No sports or homework or detentions or after school activities. No, not anymore. Then I start to think about those late nights I stayed up playing my guitar hoping I would someday be good at it; and then I remember. The only thing I still do today that I did back in high school is play guitar. And I’m damn happy that I do!

We at dailyguitarist.com would love to hear what you, our readers, first guitar experience was like. So pull up a chair, get comfortable, and have some fun. And as always, keep playing and check back for more updates!

Hey.. really interesting story you got here… kinda reminds me of ‘Summer of 69′!!

Even though I’m a huge enthusiast, I don’t have a guitar of my own. I use my frined’s guitar occasionally!!
